Orchestra classes at Cambridge

Currently there are three levels of orchestra offered at Cambridge. Each class is made up of approximately 25-35 students, and meets every day. Students must be enrolled in the course on their student schedule for both the fall and spring semester to participate.

There are many opportunities for additional ensemble experience both before and after school, based on student interest and experience. Placement is determined by audition during early spring of the previous school year. While musical ability is the primary factor for placement, dedication and leadership demonstrated in previous ensembles are also considered. All ensembles perform several concerts per year, and participate in the Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE) each winter.

Symphonic Orchestra (Intermediate Orchestra I-IV)

Prerequisites: Completed the equivalent of at least one year of middle school orchestra instruction. This is the automatic placement for all students unless they successfully audition into Philharmonic or Chamber Orchestra. The repertoire studied in Intermediate Orchestra is equivalent to GMEA Level III. Private lessons are encouraged.

Philharmonic Orchestra (Advanced Orchestra I-IV)

Prerequisites: Completed the equivalent of three years of middle school orchestra instruction. Placement in Philharmonic Orchestra is determined by audition and recommendation of the previous instructor if coming from another Fulton County school. The repertoire studied in Advanced Orchestra is equivalent to GMEA Level IV/V. Private lessons are encouraged.

Chamber Orchestra (Mastery Orchestra I-IV)

Prerequisites: This is the most advanced orchestra at Cambridge. Placement in Chamber Orchestra is determined by audition and recommendation of the previous instructor if coming from another Fulton County school. . The repertoire studied in Mastery Orchestra is equivalent to GMEA Level VI and will require extensive personal practice outside of school. Private lessons are strongly encouraged. This ensemble requires an intensive time commitment which will include extra performances and extra rehearsals before or after school.

Additional performance opportunities

Additional opportunities for students to perform are available throughout the year. These include honors ensembles that require an audition or application (ex. All-State Orchestra, Fulton County Honors Orchestra), playing in the pit for the annual musical (instrumentation depends on the show chosen), and community performances at venues such as nursing homes.
