Orchestra Classes at Cambridge

There are currently three levels of orchestra offered at Cambridge. Each class is made up of approximately 25-35 students, and meets every day. There are many opportunities for additional ensemble experience both before and after school, based on student interest and experience. Placement is determined by audition during early spring of the previous school year. While musical ability is the primary factor for placement, dedication and leadership demonstrated in previous ensembles are also considered. All ensembles perform several concerts per year, and participate in the Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE) each winter.

Intermediate Orchestra

Prerequisites: Completed the equivalent of two years of middle school orchestra instruction. This is the automatic placement for all rising 9th and 10th graders unless they successfully audition into Mastery Orchestra. The repertoire studied in Intermediate Orchestra is equivalent to GMEA Level III. Private lessons are encouraged.

Advanced Orchestra

Prerequisites: Completed the equivalent of three years of middle school orchestra instruction. This is the automatic placement for all rising 9th and 10th graders unless they successfully audition into Mastery Orchestra. The repertoire studied in Advanced Orchestra is equivalent to GMEA Level IV/V. Private lessons are encouraged.

Mastery Orchestra

Prerequisites: This is the most advanced orchestra at Cambridge. Students must have completed the equivalent of three years of middle school orchestra instruction, plus the recommendation of a previous director and complete an orchestra audition for Mrs. Justice. The repertoire studied in Mastery Orchestra is equivalent to GMEA Level VI and will require extensive personal practice outside of school. Private lessons are strongly encouraged. This ensemble requires an intensive time commitment which will include extra performances and extra rehearsals before or after school.
